WHAT IS BAPA ?

BAPA is a non political, non profit making group created in 1985 to lobby against the British Government's selective discrimination of British expatriate age pensioners living in 48 countries who are deprived of the indexation of their pension.

This discriminatory policy originated in the 1950s at a time when Sterling was in desperate straits, but continues today though the British economy is flourishing.

It affects 490,000 British pensioners - being over half the British pensioners resident overseas and just 4% of the total number.

The remaining 96%, in Britain, the European Union, the Republic of Ireland, the United States, Barbados, Jamaica, Malta and some 20 other countries, have their pensions upgraded every year.

To consolidate the thrust of the "frozen" expatriates by an interchange of ideas and suggestions in 1994. BAPA initiated the formation of other worldwide frozen expatriate pensioner groups under the banner of the World Alliance of British Expatriate Pensioners (WABEP) consisting of Canada, South Africa and Zimbabwe.

During our ongoing discussions with the Australian Dept of Family & Community Services (DFACS) it became apparent that to ensure some degree of accountability BAPA would be best served by becoming an Incorporated Association, therefore our Constitution was promulgated and incorporation granted on the 3 February 1995. Since then with the inevitable availability of the computer we have expanded our communication facilities to embrace a membership base, spread across all States, which has been further enhanced by our established web site www.britishpensions.org.au, managed by our Webmaster David Waterhouse, which contains a wealth of information regarding the frozen pension issue.
